The pretty big opinions of fairly tiny people on books

On our book journey this month at Soup we stumbled upon the absolute best thing ever- children's books. They're colourful, imaginative, beautifully illustrated and hilarious. It's almost impossible to pick and analyse favourites. So we called in a few experts on children's literature to do the job for us.

What is poo? reviewed by five year old Ved

Ved taking a walk in the woods

Ved's favourite book is 'What is poo?' by Katie Daynes. This interactive flap book delves into the absorbing matter of ummm...faecal matter with delightful glimpses of animal bottoms, undersides of toilets and blue whale poo, which by the way is pink.

How many times have you read the book?

Ved: Five

Why so many times?

Ved: I like the book even though it's boring.

Openable flaps lead to interesting interactive discoveries in 'What is poo?'

Who was your favourite character?

Ved: I find the Zoo Keeper's character interesting, he can see everyone's poo.

How much would you rate this book on ten?

Ved: Five

The hairy toe, reviewed by seven year old twins Agastya and Aaroh

Agastya and Aaroh discovering the joys of making a mess around a year ago.

The twins can't get enough of 'The Hairy Toe' by Daniel Postgate. The story follows an old woman who finds a hairy toe and decides to keep it (why?!) only to be hunted down by the toe's monstrous original owner.

Why did you choose this book to read?

Agastya- Because the monster is ugly.

Aaroh- Because when the woman is scared she looks funny.

A fairly old story 'The hairy toe' still makes kids tremble and giggle in equal measure.

Which sentence really stayed with you?

In unison shouting- WHERE'S MY HAIRRRY TOOOE?

Will you read this book again?

Agastya- Yes! 50,000 times.

Aaroh- Fifty thousand lakh hundred times.

What did you learn from this book?

Agastya- Don't pick up anything that looks strange.

They rated the book fifty thousand lakh crores on ten.

You choose, reviewed by six year old Athira

Athira on holiday

Athira is a huge fan of 'You Choose' by Pippa Goodhart. With plenty of prettily illustrated choices posed to the reader for questions that range from 'where would you sleep? to 'who would you like for family and friends?' the books allows the child to pick and imagine anything, anywhere and anyone.

Choices range from Count Dracula to doughnuts in this imaginative book that gives the reader an early start in forming opinions and making decisions.

Is this your absolute favourite book?

Athira: I really love this book and it's a very lovely book. Thank you!

How many times have you read this book?

Athira: Ten

What is your favourite part?

Athira: When they ask what will you do for fun? My favourite is that because my favourite is bungee jumping.

If you were bored would you read this book or watch TV?

Athira: I'll either do both or one.
